Prince of Persia Creator Jordan Mechner Wants to Revive Franchise

Prince of Persia was definitely a worthy mention for its era. The mid-00s saw the release of three Prince of Persia titles before Ubisoft moved on to the Assassin’s Creed franchise. While Assassin’s Creed is the result of the natural progression of the series’ mechanics, there are many fans that miss the old feel and story of the old series.

One such fan, Chrissy Teigan, a model and TV show host, posted on Twitter about how much she enjoyed Prince of Persia and wondered if the franchise was still kicking. Jordan Mechner, the creator of the original Prince of Persia, tweeted back, "Chrissy, I know a few other people who feel the same way. We’re doing our best to make it happen!"

Ubisoft announces Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame coming soon to mobile

It looks like Android could very well be getting another Prince of Persia game in the near future. According to an announcement Ubisoft made yesterday, the company has been working on a new Prince of Persia game for mobile platforms called Prince of Persia: The Shadow and The Flame.

While the game announcement doesn't go into specifics as to which platforms this new Prince of Persia game would be arriving on, it is a safe bet that it will be for both iOS and Android (since it is the same Ubisoft division that made Prince of Persia Classic for both platforms) although you can probably expect the Android version to be released after the iOS version.

Prince of Persia Franchise ‘Paused’; Weirdly, This is Probably a Prince Of Persia Reboot

“As soon as we have something to show, we will.”

Ubisoft has “paused” the Prince of Persia franchise while it considers new ideas. In an interview with IGN, Ubisoft Montreal CEO Yannis Mallat confirmed that the series is currently taking a break, but explained that shouldn’t be taken as a bad sign.

“Brand management is a tricky thing,” Mallat told IGN. “It needs people's attention a lot. I think it is fair to say that, right now, Prince of Persia is being paused. But we said the same thing for some other brands that suddenly popped up because a team is willing to do it.”

The "Prince of Persia" rumor returns

The screenshot, which emerged on the official Ubisoft forums this weekend, makes reference to 'PoP Zero 2'. According to long-standing reports, 'PoP Zero' was a failed 2008 reinvention of the Prince of Persia series set in the modern era.

After the secret project was canned, many features and design ideas were said to have been incorporated into the original Assassin's Creed. The first whispers of a new 'Persia were voiced ahead of this year's E3, when supposedly leaked images appeared showing a cloaked figure and the phrase "Judgement is coming". The 'leaked' E3 pics appear to align with what we can see in today's image. We've contacted Ubisoft for comment. [SOURCE]

Leaked Ubisoft Images Tease New ‘Prince of Persia’?

Leaked images can prove to be massively informative or completely misleading, and the latest grabs of what looks to be a cinematic trailer from Ubisoft could go either way. Beyond some classical glimpses of armor and weaponry, it’s difficult to tell if the developer is preparing to unveil a new Prince of Persia title at E3 2012, or another entirely different property. Either way, it seems that ‘Judgment is Coming.’

The Prince Of Persia among Guiness' "Top 50 Video Game Characters of All Time"

Guinness asked gamers to vote for the top 50 video game characters of all time, so if your favorite character is not represented in this list you probably should have voted harder. More than 13,000 gamers cast their vote at the Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition website in order to create this list, and it ended up pretty much as one would have expected. Mario, Link, and Master Chief top the rankings, with very few surprises popping up in the remaining 47. I would not have expected Eddie Riggs from Brutal Legend to make the list, for instance, and Naruto doesn't seem like he should count.

Nintendo's penchant for creating memorable characters shines through, with 11 entries coming from the house that Mario built. Of course Luigi is not one of those 11. Everyone hates Luigi. Check out the full list below to see if your favorites made the cut.

1. Mario (Donkey Kong, Nintendo, 1981)
2. Link (The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo, 1986)
3. Master Chief (Halo: Combat Evolved, Microsoft, 2001)
4. Solid Snake (Metal Gear, Konami, 1987)
5. Cloud Strife (Final Fantasy VII, Square, 1997)
6. PAC-Man (PAC-Man, Namco, 1980)
7. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider, Eidos 1996)

Ubisoft Started, Scrapped Modern-Day Prince of Persia

At the dawn of this console generation, Ubisoft had been working on a Prince of Persia game set in the modern day - but scrapped it before it was ever announced.

The Prince of Persia series had quite a good showing last console generation, but sadly has been mostly forgettable this time around. While Forgotten Sands was set in the middle of the last-generation Sands of Time trilogy, and Prince of Persia (2008) had a more fantastic feel to it, Ubisoft had toyed with another setting for the Prince: the present day.

Speaking with Xbox 360 World, former Ubisoft artist Jonathan Jacques-Belletête - currently the art director at Eidos for Deus Ex: Human Revolution - said that Ubisoft had originally planned to start the Assassin's Creed franchise on the PS2 and Xbox. After that original Creed was canceled, "[Ubisoft] wanted a spin off for Prince of Persia. We had some awesome ideas with that too ... in contemporary time."

Focus signs deal with Ubisoft

UK games publisher to offer premium titles at a low price point...

UK-based PC games and software publisher Focus Multimedia has signed a new republishing deal with Ubisoft, which will see the British firm release a number of popular titles under its Essential Games label. Under the agreement, Focus will offer key Ubisoft titles such as Prince of Persia, Far Cry 2 and the Tom Clancy series. Alan Wild, PR and marketing manager at Focus, said: “These ‘triple A’ releases from Ubisoft further strengthen Focus Multimedia’s value games offering for PC gamers. We know that most gamers can’t afford to buy all the games they would like to at full price, and some truly amazing games can pass them by.

“Our Essential range is the perfect route to market to revitalise such games. The new £9.99 price point is also ideal for younger gamers, as well as for newcomers to the world of PC gaming. "Alongside our existing portfolio of casual and core games, these Ubisoft titles provide customers with the opportunity to buy recent, high quality titles at new, low prices.” Prince of Persia is the first of the newly agreed games to be released, which the publishers claim offers ‘an experience rivalling the best blockbuster Hollywood movies’.

Rumor: Splinter Cell and Prince of Persia Trilogies Coming to PS3

While Ubisoft didn't reveal anything about this yet, Amazon France is currently listing two upcoming Playstation 3 games: Prince of Persia Trilogy and Splinter Cell Trilogy.

These games already exist for the previous generation consoles and the PC, and Splinter Cell Trilogy included: Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, and the original Splinter Cell, while Prince of Persia Trilogy included: The Sands of Time, Warrior Within, and The Two Thrones. No word yet about any changes to these games in their transition to the Playstation 3.

While these foreign Amazon listings tend to hit the nail on the head most of the time, keep in mind this is just a rumor. Still, would you be happy if Ubisoft really released these titles? [Source: VG247]

Author, screenwriter and video game designer Jordan Mechner, best known as the creator of the Prince of Persia franchise, will be a keynote speaker at the IN 2010 conference, taking place from September 12-14 at the Carlu in Toronto, Interactive Ontario has announced.

U.S.-based Mechner became the first game creator to successfully adapt his own work as a feature film screenwriter with Disney's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, directed by Mike Newell and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, Sir Ben Kingsley, and Alfred Molina, Prince of Persia was the #1 movie in the world for its first two weeks of release in May 2010, and is the world's highest-grossing video game adaptation ever.

Electronic Arts and Ubisoft Part Ways

Word surfaced this afternoon that Electronic Arts has decided to part ways with French developer Ubisoft. The official word is that Electronic Arts sold their stake in the company to reduce their stock portfolio and facilitate upcoming changes in their strategic priorities.

According to a statement released by Electronic Arts: “More recently, the Ubisoft position has been viewed as a portfolio holding, rather than a strategic holding.” Marketing experts estimate that the transaction was worth $122 million. The sale of their business doesn’t seem to be phasing Ubisoft, as the value of the company’s stock has gone up 1.7 percent since the news was released.

G4TV's "A Prince of Persia Primer: Everything you Need to know" 1 & 2

PART ONE: Disney's massive summer blockbuster wannabe The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time opens everywhere today, and let's face the facts: you're probably going to go see this movie, despite our own scathing review. We understand. Sometimes you just have to see these things for yourself. Or maybe you're inexorably drawn to Jake Gyllenhaal's oiled pecs, or Gemma Arteron's ... everything. Just don't tell us that we didn't warn you.

But Prince of Persia first debuted as a video game in 1989, which means that many of the people that will be dragging their parents with them to multiplexes this weekend don't even know the rich video game history behind this franchise, and I refuse to stand idly by and let them think the name just means a movie starring the guy who didn't make it as Spider-Man. With that, I give you our Prince of Persia Primer. Go ahead, soak it in... [READ MORE]

PART TWO: Memorial Day weekend isn't over yet, and that means some of you still have time to catch Disney's swashbuckling The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in theaters. But did you know what brought us up to this point? In our first part of this guide, we covered everything from the classic 1989 Prince of Persia, all the way up to the trilogy relaunch from Ubisoft a few years ago. But, Jordan Mechner's creation didn't stop there. There were more games, and even other creations, yet to come...[READ MORE]

Classic Prince of Persia Hits iPhone and iPad

With all the Prince of Persia hubbub floating about, it could be time to trace the game back to its awesome roots. Thankfully Ubisoft are offering a quick option, which is to nab the game for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad from iTunes (so many "i"s), for the ridiculously low price of AU$1.19.

The game has also been slightly touched up for the platforms (and is called Prince of Persia Retro), but maintains its original formula and gameplay, which is excellent news. If you've never dabbled in Jordan Mechner's original genius, now's the time.

IGN.com: Prince of Persia Retro Review

A great retro game at a great price.

Just as Prince of Persia unspools in theaters across the country this weekend, Ubisoft shuffles the game that started it all on to the App Store. Prince of Persia Retro is a pixel-perfect port of the 1989 original. You must escape a dungeon within an hour in order to stop the evil vizier from marrying the princess. Prince of Persia was and remains a landmark game. While I appreciate the retro look, I do wish iPhone and iPad gamers also had a crack at Gameloft's Xbox Live Arcade refresh. The game itself remained the same, but the updated visuals are excellent.

'Prince of Persia Retro' Arrives on the App Store as a Universal App… For a Dollar

In what would appear to be a perfect storm of awesomeness comes a completely surprising release from Ubisoft. Earlier this month we posted some vague details on Prince of Persia Retro [99¢] based on a small blurb and a few screenshots found on the Ubisoft web site. And while I had high expectations of the game, given its classic roots, I never would have imagined that Ubisoft would not only push the game out as a universal iPhone/iPad title on day one, but also launch at 99¢.

In the game, you must save a princess from the evil Persian vizier, Jaffar. You have an hour to do it, and in between you and her are tons of enemies to fight and obstacles to overcome. My initial impressions of the game are positive so far, but like most games designed for physical controls then ported to the iPhone, I have found myself fat fingering some jumps and generally just making play mistakes because of the inherent inaccuracies of virtual controls.

Ubisoft Definitely Not Done With Prince of Persia

A double dose of Prince of Persia is quite a lot to take in at one time with both a major motion picture and home video game hitting within the same period of time. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time hits theaters this Friday which coincides with the release of the Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands game that just launched last week.

Even though there is plenty of Prince of Persia to take in right now, Ubisoft vows that they are nowhere near done with the franchise. In an interview with Industry Gamers, Graeme Jennings, producer of The Forgotten Sands sat down to discuss the future of the franchise.

When asked about the ‘Sands of Time’ trilogy, Jennings said: “We always planned to return to the Sands of Time Trilogy. In fact we started development onThe Forgotten Sands about two years ago while the 2008 version of Prince of Persia was still in production. This does not mean we cannot have other stories under the Prince of Persia name like we did in 2008. The great thing about 1,001 Arabian Nights is the ability to tell different stories about different people.” That certainly sounds like we will be seeing more Prince of Persia, and likely more often than usually thought. If you’ve checked out the latest Prince of Persia game, let us know in the comments below.
