‘Letters to Juliet,’ ‘Big Bang,’ ‘Glee’ among top-selling DVDs

Home video fans are clamoring for something new. Nine out of the 10 top-selling discs in the week ending Sept. 19 are new releases, led by Walt Disney Studios' "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," a family film that debuted No. 1 on all three charts.
According to Nielsen VideoScan sales data, "Prince" sold nearly twice as many copies its first week in stores as its nearest competitor, Summit Entertainment's "Letters to Juliet," which debuted at No. 2 on the First Alert sales chart.
Next in the line on the sales chart: the complete Season 3 set of acclaimed TV sitcom "The Big Bang Theory" from Warner, followed by the direct-to-video "Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale" from Universal Studios at No. 4 and "Glee: The Complete First Season" from 20th Century Fox at No. 5. Four other new releases, all but one a TV DVD season set, followed on the sales chart, bumping the previous week's top-seller, Lionsgate's "Killers" to No. 10.
New release-mania also was evident on Nielsen's dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart, with the top five all BD debutantes. "Prince of Persia" was followed by "Letters to Juliet" at No. 2, "Glee: The Complete First Season" at No. 3, "Fringe: The Complete Second Season" from Warner at No. 4, and "The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Third Season" at No. 5. "Killers" slipped to No. 6, after debuting at No. 1 the previous week.
Only the rental end of the business is less time-sensitive -- perhaps because renters are more willing to wait, as evidenced by the 28-day windows imposed on Netflix and Redbox, which together account for more than 50% of all rental transactions. "Prince of Persia" and "Letters to Juliet" still debuted at No. 1 and No. 2 on Home Media Magazine's weekly rental chart, but No. 3 went to "The Killers," a slippage of just two points (and a modest 17% drop in rental transactions, according to Home Media Magazine Market Research) from the previous week.
Fourth place went to Tyler Perry's "Why Did I Get Married Too?" from Lionsgate, which was No. 3 the previous week and No. 1 its debut week. And the No. 5 rental was "Solitary Man," an Anchor Bay drama that debuted in the same position last week.
